Neighborhood Revitalization Subcommittee

Meeting Minutes

7/6/01

 

Attending:

Jeff Beiswenger, Kathy Minden, Karen Burger-Kimber, Brett Walker

 

Strategy Session:

The subcommittee spent the majority of the meeting attempting to identify possible goals, objectives and tasks relevant to neighborhood revitalization that can be presented to the steering committee for final approval.  Five possible goals were identified, and objectives and tasks were discussed for each goal.

 

Ø      Possible Goals:

  1. Develop resident buy-in/ownership in target area

A.      Neighborhood Activities (children’s parade, family oriented activities, food fair, health fair, concerts, street dances, farmer’s market, international market, day camps, workshops, seminars, cultural fairs, etc.) that link back to both neighborhood development and crime prevention.

B.       Develop a community logo

C.      Create a sign or archway that says something along the lines of “you have entered the Rockwood neighborhood.”

D.      Develop a town square

E.       Architectural planning

  1. Develop community identity/personality
  2. Provide enrichment/educational opportunities

A.     After school programs

B.     Safe haven

C.     Provide youth/adult activities between 3 and 7 PM as a crime prevention measure.

D.     Provide space for Head Start/Early Head Start.

  1. Increase safety in target areas

A.     Develop strategies to use home ownership as a means for crime prevention

B.     Provide activities as an alternative to alcohol and drug use

C.     Improve networking with all elements of the community (schools, churches, medical offices, neighborhood organizations, businesses, etc.)

5.   Work to improve housing conditions

A.     Provide opportunities for continued education for apartment managers

B.     Coordinate with and/or help form a tenants association and partner with agencies like the Fair Housing Council to allow tenants to report bad landlords.

C.     Establish a disorderly nuisance hotline for people to anonymously report bad housing conditions and neighborhood nuisances.

D.     Hold informal sessions to listen to concerns of renters, and give them knowledge of and access to resources.

E.      Multilingual information sharing and networking of resources.

 

 

 

 

At this point, these ideas are still very rough and will need to be reviewed and organized by the whole subcommittee.  

 

Next Meeting:

Those members who were in attendance at this meeting agreed that it is necessary for the subcommittee to meet again in early August.  The subcommittee will need greater participation at the August meeting to come up with solid recommendations.  Information about the next meeting will be forthcoming.
