Earned Income Credit (EIC)
EITC is a tax credit for certain working individuals and families who meet the income requirements. A tax credit reduces the amount of tax you owe. The EITC may also give you a refund.

  • Created in 1975, the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) helps offset Social Security taxes and provides an incentive for work. It is the federal government's largest benefits program for working families.
  • Depending on eligibility, the new maximum credit is $4,536 for a family with two or more children; $2,747 for a family with one child and $412 if there are single persons.
  • An estimated 20 percent more people may qualify for EITC but may not be aware of it.

Child Tax Credit (CTC)
The Child Tax Credit is a federal tax credit worth up to $1,000 for each qualifying child under age 17 claimed on the worker's tax return. While the CTC has been available since 1998, Congress changed the credit in 2001 to make it available to millions more low- and moderate-income working families and provided many families a larger CTC than they could have received in the past.

To be eligible for the CTC , a worker must:

  • have a qualifying child under 17
  • have taxable earned income above $11,000
  • have either a Social Security number (SSN) or an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN). ITINs are issued by the IRS to individuals who are unable to obtain a Social Security number.
  • Immigrant workers with either a SSN or an ITIN may be able to claim the CTC refund.
