ACTIVE LIVING BY DESIGN - LENTS STATION SPRINGWATER CORRIDOR TRAILHEAD

PSU Client Presentation

Active Living by Design in Three Oregon Communities is an innovative partnership among advocacy organizations, private businesses, and public agencies that have a stake in creating active community environments. The lead organization for this project are the Oregon Coalition for Promoting physical activity and the American Heart Association/Pacific Mountain Affiliate.

Established in 2003, Oregon's Active Living by Design partnership is dedicated to expanding the network of local and state partners that are defining links among the built environment, creating active communities, and promoting healthy lifestyles among Oregonians. The partnership provides the opportunity for citizens and community leaders in transportation, public health, land use, urban planning, parks and recreation, and community service to apply a diverse set of strategies for promoting active living through improved community design.

Three projects in the Portland Metro area highlight different strategies to promote active living through community design, such as influencing the early stages of urban design and transportation planning to incorporate active living principles, enhancing a local trail to promote active living and connect neighborhoods to natural environments, and taking advantage of neighborhood improvements to transit, pedestrian, and cyclist infrastructure to encourage physically active modes of travel.

The Lents Station Springwater Corridor Trailhead project involves designing, building, and promoting the Lents Station Interpretive Trailhead on the existing Springwater Corridor Trail (SCT), a multi-purpose trail that travels through the Lents neighborhood. Planned project improvement to make Lents Station a bike and pedestrian destination include benches, artwork, interpretive signage in several languages, a community tool shed for bike repairs, public restrooms, a water fountain, and off-street parking. Currently the nearest full access point to the trail with parking, benches, and restrooms is 40 blocks away from the Lents neighborhood. A Lents Station trailhead will provide local residents better amenities and access to this outstanding urban recreation facility. Project Partners include Lents/Brentwood-Darlington Weed & Seed, Portland Parks and Recreation, Portland Development Commission, and more.
