Overview of Weed and Seed Program

See the National Weed and Seed conference schedule

Weed and Seed is a community revitalization strategy that combines various aspects of law enforcement with community development projects. Weed and Seed strategies coordinate federal participation in cooperation with the U.S. Attorneys Offices and other federal law enforcement agencies, as well as other federal agencies such as HUD and the Department of Education.

Every Weed and Seed site is different but each site uses a strategy that combines four specific components:

  1. Community Policing
  2. Law Enforcement
  3. Prevention and Intervention
  4. Neighborhood Restoration
To gain "official recognition" as a Weed and Seed site from the US Department of Justice, the community must develop a local, comprehensive, workable strategy that addresses each of these components. They must plan for addressing crime consistent with Weed and Seed goals. Training and technical assistance is also provided through USDJ.

Being an officially recognized site allows the community to apply for federal grant funding.
